Chickenpox is a common childhood infection caused by the varicella zoster virus. While it is usually mild in healthy children, it can cause serious illness in adults, newborns, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Vaccination before exposure is the most effective way to prevent infection.
The vaccine is given as two doses, usually four to eight weeks apart. Two doses provide strong long lasting protection. After vaccination, most people are protected for many years, and if they do encounter the virus, any illness is typically much milder.
