Ear wax is a normal and helpful substance produced by the ear canal. In some people it builds up and blocks the canal, causing muffled hearing, a sensation of fullness, tinnitus, or mild earache. Microsuction is the gold standard method for removing compacted ear wax safely and without irrigation.
At Pharmacy One we use a video otoscope so you can see your ear canal on screen as we work, and microsuction equipment to gently remove the wax. The procedure is quick, usually 20 to 30 minutes for both ears, and most patients find it comfortable. Unlike syringing, microsuction does not use water, which makes it safe for people with a perforated eardrum or a history of ear surgery.
We recommend using olive oil drops for at least five days before your appointment to soften the wax. Book online or call us on 0161 437 2634 to arrange a time.
Who it's for
Adults and children aged 8 and over with a build up of ear wax causing reduced hearing, discomfort, or a blocked feeling. A recent NHS ear drop softening course is recommended before your appointment.
What to expect
- Short assessment to examine the ear canal with a video otoscope so you can see what we see.
- Microsuction performed using a fine suction tube. Most patients describe it as a gentle vibration rather than pain.
- Both ears treated in a single session if needed. The appointment typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- Aftercare advice on preventing future build up.
