Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It causes a painful blistering rash and can lead to long term nerve pain known as post herpetic neuralgia. The Shingrix vaccine significantly reduces the risk of shingles developing and, if it does occur, reduces its severity.
Shingrix is given as two doses, two to six months apart, for the best level of protection. Adults aged 65 to 70 can receive it free through the NHS at Pharmacy One.
