Malaria is a serious infection spread by mosquito bites in parts of Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Where you travel and how long you stay determines which antimalarial tablets are most suitable and whether they are needed at all.
Common options
- Atovaquone with proguanil (Malarone): daily tablet, start 1 to 2 days before travel, continue 7 days after returning.
- Doxycycline: daily tablet, start 1 to 2 days before travel, continue 4 weeks after returning. Not suitable in pregnancy or for under 12s.
- Mefloquine: weekly tablet, start 2 to 3 weeks before travel, continue 4 weeks after returning. Some patients should not take this; we will check at the consultation.
