Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It spreads through contaminated food and water and is most common in parts of South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and South America where sanitation is limited. Symptoms include a sustained high temperature, abdominal pain, and fatigue, and without treatment the illness can become severe.
Vaccination is recommended for travellers heading to at-risk destinations, especially those visiting friends and relatives, eating street food, or travelling outside major tourist areas. Two vaccine options are available: a single injectable dose or a short oral course of capsules. Both provide around 3 years of protection, and we can help you decide which suits your itinerary.

When you need this vaccine
- Travel to South Asia, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where typhoid is common

Schedule
- Injectable vaccine (Vi polysaccharide): a single injection. Protection develops around 2 weeks after vaccination and lasts up to 3 years.
- Oral vaccine (Ty21a): 3 capsules taken on alternate days, completed at least 1 week before travel. Lasts around 3 years.
- Booster doses are recommended every 3 years for travellers who remain at risk.
- Neither vaccine is 100% effective, so care with food and water hygiene remains important.
