Most insect bites and stings cause only mild irritation and settle within a few days. However, if the skin around a bite becomes warm, increasingly red, swollen, or starts to discharge pus, bacteria may have entered the wound and an infection could be developing. Scratching a bite repeatedly or not keeping the area clean raises the risk of this happening.
Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess the bite site and, where clinically appropriate, supply antibiotic treatment on the spot without a GP appointment. The service is available for adults and children aged 1 and over.

Symptoms we can treat
- Skin around the bite feels warm or hot to the touch
- Increasing redness and swelling at the bite site
- Pain that is getting worse rather than improving
- Pus or discharge coming from the wound
- Symptoms that are not settling after a few days
What to expect at your appointment
- A brief clinical assessment of the bite site and surrounding skin.
- Decision based on the assessment: self care advice, or antibiotics if clinically indicated.
- Treatment supplied on the spot under Patient Group Direction if needed.
- Advice on keeping the area clean and signs to watch for.
