Earache Treatment

Earache is very common in children and is most often caused by an infection in the middle ear. The pain can come on quickly and may be accompanied by a fever, difficulty hearing, or general irritability. In most cases the infection is short-lived and clears without antibiotics, but some children benefit from treatment.

Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can assess your child’s symptoms and, where clinically appropriate, supply antibiotics on the spot without a GP appointment. The service is available for children aged 1 to 17 years old.

Symptoms we can treat

• Pain or discomfort in one or both ears
• Pulling or tugging at the ear (in young children)
• Fever of 38C or above
• Difficulty hearing or responding to sounds
• Irritability, restlessness, or loss of appetite

What to expect at your appointment

1. A brief clinical assessment of the ear and any associated symptoms.
2. Decision based on findings: self care advice, or antibiotics if clinically indicated.
3. Treatment supplied on the spot under Patient Group Direction if needed.
4. Advice on managing discomfort at home and when to seek further help.
