Sinusitis is an inflammation of the air cavities inside the face, most commonly triggered by a cold or flu infection. The sinuses become congested, causing facial pain, a blocked nose, and sometimes a high temperature. Most episodes settle without any specific treatment within a few weeks.
Where symptoms are more severe or prolonged, a pharmacist can assess whether antibiotics are appropriate. Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist can supply treatment on the spot for eligible patients aged 12 and over, without a GP appointment.

- A brief clinical assessment of your symptoms and how long they have been present.
- Decision based on the assessment: self care advice, or antibiotics if clinically indicated.
- Treatment supplied on the spot under Patient Group Direction if needed.
- Advice on managing congestion and when to seek further help.

How long does sinusitis usually last?
Most cases resolve on their own within 2 to 3 weeks. If your symptoms are severe, worsening, or have lasted more than 10 days without improvement, our pharmacist can help decide whether treatment is appropriate.
